SCAC Identity Verification
Identity verification is required for Standard Carrier Alpha Code® (SCAC™) issuance and renewal
to help ensure every SCAC is tied to a real, verified individual.
This step strengthens trust across the freight ecosystem while protecting personal privacy.

New:
Effective February 26, 2026, identity verification is required for non-Class 8 carriers only when applying for or renewing a SCAC.
This requirement is part of the National Motor Freight Traffic Association, Inc.® (NMFTA)™ phased approach to strengthening trust and reducing freight fraud, particularly impersonation and misuse of carrier identities.
Privacy and Data Protection
NMFTA does not display or sell personal data. Only verification status is associated with a SCAC.
ID verification confirms that a real, verified individual is associated with a SCAC during issuance or renewal. Verification:
-
ID verification confirms that a real, verified individual is tied to a SCAC at issuance or renewal. It verifies who is associated with the code, not the carrier’s operations, safety record, or authority, providing clear identity assurance at critical moments like onboarding and tendering.
-
By binding a verified identity to each SCAC lifecycle event, this step raises the barrier against common fraud tactics like impersonation, fictitious pickups, and misuse of another carrier’s code, before freight ever moves.
-
A verified SCAC delivers a simple, industry-wide signal that shippers, brokers, platforms, and carriers can all check and rely on. One shared standard helps reduce friction, improve confidence, and support safer freight decisions across the network.

How Verification Works
Identity verification is completed online through the National Motor Freight Traffic Association, Inc.®’s (NMFTA)™ trusted identity partner, Persona. The process typically takes only a few minutes.
Verification confirms identity, it does not publish personal information.
Why Identity Verification Is Required
Identity misuse is a common factor in freight fraud. Verification helps:
-
Prevent impersonation
-
Protect legitimate carriers
-
Reduce fraudulent onboarding
Important Note
At this time, ID verification applies only to Non-Class 8 carriers. Class 8 carriers do not need to complete ID verification at this time.
Non-Class 8 pertains to all vehicles with a GVWR of 33,000 pounds or less.
Those drivers who primarily operate the following vehicles would be classified as non-class 8 drivers:
- Box trucks (non-CDL or CDL);
- Cargo vans or sprinter vans;
- Local and regional delivery fleets;
- Last-mile or middle-mile contract operations; or
- Independent owner-operator services supporting larger networks.
Privacy and Data Protection
NMFTA does not display or sell personal data. Only verification status is associated with a SCAC.

Trust the Code
SCAC is more than an administrative requirement. It's the identifier the industry uses to confirm who is authorized to move freight, support onboarding and tendering workflows, and reduce the risk of impersonation and double brokering. Watch the video below to discover how NMFTA is improving the existing SCAC Online platform to become SCAC Verified.

The ID Verification process is an extra $5 fee on top of the SCAC fee. If a verification is a failure (i.e., rejected), the customer will be charged again to retry.
