How ID Verification Works

ID verification is completed during the Standard Carrier Alpha Code® (SCAC) application or renewal process through the National Motor Freight Traffic Association, Inc.’s® (NMFTA)™ official SCAC system at scaccode.com

The process is designed to be secure, efficient, and completed online. And it’s truly as easy as 1, 2, 3!

Apply

1. Begin SCAC Application or Renewal

You’ll start by applying for or renewing your SCAC through scaccode.com. If ID verification is required for your carrier type, you’ll be prompted during the process.

2. Capture your ID

You’ll be guided through a secure identity verification flow that confirms your identity and matches you to official identification. It will prompt you to take an image of both the front and back of your ID.

3. Capture your selfie

Use a phone or other device with a camera to take a self-portrait in a well-lit area. Once this is complete, most verifications are completed in minutes.

Once completed...

Your verification status is associated with your SCAC, no personal data is displayed publicly, and status may be reflected in SCAC Verified™ lookup tools.

Privacy and Data Protection
NMFTA does not display or sell personal data. Only verification status is associated with a SCAC. NMFTA also does not store information of your ID or selfie.

Need Help with Verification?

If verification cannot be completed immediately, support options are available.

Important Note

At this time, ID verification applies only to Non-Class 8 carriers. Class 8 carriers do not need to complete ID verification at this time.

Non-Class 8 pertains to all vehicles with a GVWR of 33,000 pounds or less.

Those drivers who primarily operate the following vehicles would be classified as non-class 8 drivers:

  • Box trucks (non-CDL or CDL);
  • Cargo vans or sprinter vans;
  • Local and regional delivery fleets;
  • Last-mile or middle-mile contract operations; or
  • Independent owner-operator services supporting larger networks.
Privacy and Data Protection

NMFTA does not display or sell personal data. Only verification status is associated with a SCAC.

Trust the Code

SCAC is more than an administrative requirement. It's the identifier the industry uses to confirm who is authorized to move freight, support onboarding and tendering workflows, and reduce the risk of impersonation and double brokering. Watch the video below to discover how NMFTA is improving the existing SCAC Online platform to become SCAC Verified.
