SCAC for Class 8 Carriers

Class8 Signal

Class 8 carriers operate at the core of freight movement—and the Standard Carrier Alpha Code® (SCAC) is the identifier most commonly used to recognize carriers across shipper and broker systems, contracts, and operational workflows.

If your operation moves freight in the heavy-duty trucking space, a SCAC is a foundational credential for doing business.

Identity verification currently applies to non-Class 8 carriers only.

Why Class 8 Carriers Use SCAC

SCAC is used to:

  • Identify carriers in transportation management systems

  • Support contracting and operational documentation

  • Standardize onboarding and tendering processes

  • Reduce identity confusion across large freight networks

This verification step for non-Class 8 carriers helps ensure each SCAC is tied to a real, verified individualreducing the risk of impersonation and fraud. Learn more about ID Verification via this link

Identity Verification for Class 8 Carriers Not Required

At this time, the SCAC application and renewal process for Class 8 carriers remains unchanged.

Class 8 carriers are not required to complete identity verification as part of SCAC issuance or renewal today. You can continue to apply for and renew your SCAC using the existing process you’re familiar with.

The National Motor Freight Traffic Association, Inc.® (NMFTA) is introducing identity verification in phases, beginning with non-Class 8 carriers, as part of broader efforts to strengthen trust and reduce freight fraud across the industry.

If requirements change in the future, NMFTA will communicate updates clearly and in advance.
