Renewal Identity Verification
As part of the National Motor Freight Traffic Association, Inc.’s® (NMFTA)™ phased approach to strengthening trust and reducing freight fraud, identity verification is required for non-Class 8 carriers during Standard Carrier Alpha Code® (SCAC™) renewal, effective February 26, 2026.
This requirement does not apply to Class 8 carriers at this time.
Who This Applies To
ID verification at renewal currently applies:

Non-commercial drivers

Van and last-mile carriers

Small fleets operating as non-Class 8 carriers
Non-Class 8 category includes all vehicles with a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of 33,000 pounds or less.
Why Identity Verification is Required at Renewal
ID verification confirms that a real, verified individual is associated with a SCAC during renewal (and issuance). Verification:
-
ID verification confirms that a real, verified individual is tied to a SCAC at issuance or renewal. It verifies who is associated with the code, not the carrier’s operations, safety record, or authority, providing clear identity assurance at critical moments like onboarding and tendering.
-
By binding a verified identity to each SCAC lifecycle event, this step raises the barrier against common fraud tactics like impersonation, fictitious pickups, and misuse of another carrier’s code, before freight ever moves.
-
A verified SCAC delivers a simple, industry-wide signal that shippers, brokers, platforms, and carriers can all check and rely on. One shared standard helps reduce friction, improve confidence, and support safer freight decisions across the network.

Privacy and Data Protection
NMFTA does not display or sell personal data. Only verification status is associated with a SCAC.
Easy as 1, 2, 3
1. Apply for or renew SCAC
Start your SCAC application or renewal online. Review your company details, confirm your information, and proceed to identity verification as part of the process.
2. Capture your ID
Use your smartphone or computer to securely upload a government-issued photo ID through WithPersona. This verifies the individual completing the renewal.
3. Capture your selfie
Take a quick selfie to match your ID and confirm your identity. Once verified, submit your application to keep your SCAC active.

What Class 8 Carriers Should Know
For Class 8 carriers, the renewal process remains unchanged. No identity verification is required at this time.
Class 8 vehicles are "severe-duty" vehicles with a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of over 33,000 pounds (14,969 kg). Examples include tractor-trailers (semi-trucks or 18-wheelers), large dump trucks, and cement trucks. Operating these vehicles typically requires a commercial driver's license (CDL).

Trust the Code
Renewing your SCAC now includes identity verification, or verification of FMCSA details, turning the industry’s universal carrier code into a verified trust signal.
By verifying carriers at issuance and renewal, SCAC helps stop impersonation and reduce freight fraud before it happens. It’s a simple step that strengthens trust at tender and pickup.
